Jim Clark Rievers Rally
The MSA Scottish Rally Championship moved to the only tarmac round of the Championship for the Jim Clark Rievers Rally based in the legendary racing driver’s home town of Duns in Berwickshire.
Mike Faulkner and regular navigator Peter Foy were competing in their BSW Timber supported Evo 6 and they were optimistic about their chances prior to the event “historically this event hasn’t been kind to us” said Mike “we’ll be aiming for a top result but realistically a top 5 would be good”
The Scottish borders weather was very mixed, as crews headed for stage 1. six miles through Harehead Mike opted for Hankook Intermediate tyres, the rain was intermittent and the road very slippy. Mike was 3rd fastest, 0.6 seconds slower than second placed Ewan Thorburn in his Ev0 9.
The second test was 8 miles through Moon and Star and Kirrtlbridge driver Mike was 6th quickest, the only drama clipping a rock on the inside of the corner, fortunately the Hankook tyres remained intact a few seconds were lost as they ensured no damage was sustained. After a short service in Dunn’s crews headed out for a repeat of the first two stages, Mike was 5th overall, David Bogie and Ewan Thorburn were setting excellent times ahead. Mike was 10 seconds behind Jock Armstrong with Robbie Head in the Evo 9 and Paul Benn in Ford Focus WRC close behind, six crews were separated by just 4 seconds such was the pace of competing crews.
The stages were again slippy and Mike opted to stay on intermediate tyres, the high moor tests were drying quickly and slicks were the optimum options, Mike returned to Dunns for the second service moving up to 4th overall.
The final loop of stages through Fogo and Aldrem were tight and twisty through the lanes and Mike, now on Hankook slicks was trying hard, setting some excellent times. David Bogie in the Metro 6R4 was setting the pace at the front who along with Ewan Thorburn (in 2nd place) had contested the previous days International rally.
Mike was 2.2 seconds ahead of 5th place crew Robbie Head prior to the final stage and he was determined to stay ahead of Robbie. Setting a fantastic second overall the Supply UK backed crew were 3.8 seconds behind event winner Bogie and 6 seconds ahead of Head to claim 4th overall, his best result on the Rievers Rally to date.
Mike said at the finish, "Compared with previous Jim Clarks, it's a good result for us and I would probably have settled for that at the outset. We tried as hard as we could but couldn't quite catch Jock, but we're equally happy to have kept Robbie behind us. It was certainly a nerve-wracking last stage.
The next round of the MSA Scottish Championship the Scottish Rally is a good event for Mike and Peter, they won in 2009 and finished 2nd overall in 2008 and 2010
